Over the last couple of months here at Natural Bed Company, we’ve noticed a dramatic increase in orders of our Panama sofa bed base, so now seems like the perfect opportunity to take a look at the reasons for its popularity.

Looking at the Panama, it’s easy to see why this base has become such a favourite. Available in a wide range of sizes, from small single (75x200cm) to king size (150x200cm), this sofa bed can be used in a wide variety of spaces. Offered in our most popular timbers, including oak, ash, beech and all pine options, the Panama can fit in with all design schemes.

The Panama sofa bed is supplied with our 7 layer futon mattress, hand-made in our Sheffield workshop, creating both a comfortable sofa and bed base. Our futon-cases, made from cotton-drill are available in a variety of colour options to suit any room, from the neutral calico and mink to the more rich wine, terracotta and harmony. The futon mattress has a fixed cotton case, additional loose cotton covers can also be purchased.

If the sofa-bed is to be situated in a living room or study, you may wish to take a look at our wide range of wool loose covers, which allow the Panama to blend in with existing colour schemes in the room. You can pick from a wide selection on our website, sourced from Warwick’s Saville Row and Highland collections, but if you visit our showroom, we have the full pattern books to take a look at, giving you a much wider range of patterns and colours to choose from. If you can’t make the trip to Sheffield but would like to view the full range, this is available on the Warwick website. We can also arrange for samples of the fabric to be sent out to ease the decision making process.

In addition to the wool samples, we can also arrange for swatches of our cotton drill to be posted out, along with samples of the timbers on offer. To request these, simply call us on 01142721984 or email [email protected] with a full delivery address and the colours and timbers you require.

One of the main plus points of the Panama to my mind is the ease in which the base converts from sofa to bed. Simply pull the base forward from the arms and the rear of the sofa seat falls back, creating the bed. Then, just fold the futon out and you are ready for a comfortable night’s sleep. If the bed is going to be used only by one person, a standard single (90x200cm) should be fine. For occasional use by 2 people, for no more than one or two nights, a three-quarter (120x200cm) should do the job. If the Panama is to be used more regularly by two people, and if the size of the room allows, then the double (135x200cm) and king size (150x200cm) are the ones to take a closer look at. Please see below for a full breakdown of the dimensions of the Panama sofa-bed base:

Panama Futon Sofa Bed:
overall length: 2m
overall width: the arms add 20cm to the nominal size, eg a king-size 1.50m Panama is 1.70m wide
bed height: 25cm, including futon 38cm
sofa depth: 100cm

As with all of the beds and sofa-beds in our range, the Panama is delivered flat-packed and ready for self assembly. You will receive two boxes for the base, one containing the parts that make up the seat and another with the arms. The futon mattress arrives rolled. Whether delivered locally in the Sheffield area or nationally, the Panama will be taken to the room of your choice on delivery. We expect that the base will take approximately 30 minutes to assemble.

We are currently working to a 6 week manufacturing lead time for the Panama base and although it may seem like a while away yet, if you are considering purchasing this base for guests to use over the festive period, I would advise you to place an order in the next four weeks. This is our busiest time of year and we want to avoid disappointment wherever possible. There will be a more detailed blog on our advice for ordering a bed base in time for Christmas live on the website in the next couple of weeks, so take a look if you have any questions.
