About our ash:

We make our beds from American ash which is slightly paler than English ash. Both types of ash have an interesting grain with a strong figure. Ash is a light colour with a cream cast and usually shows a strong figure in the grain, occasionally some small darker areas of grain can occur.

Over time the tone will increase in warmth and depth. As with any wood, there are variations in grain and tone: part of the charm of a natural product. To preserve the lighter, fresh colour which is part of the beauty of newly planed ash we use a water based finish for the lacquer.

If you think it’s important to buy timber from sustainable forests, rest assured! Our ash is sourced from well managed forests on the eastern coast of North America. Buying timber from managed forests ensures that new trees are planted and the cycle of planting, growth and harvest can continue.

Ash has been in the news this last year on account of the ash die-back disease that’s taken hold in parts of the UK, we mentioned ash die-back on our blog http://www.naturalbedcompany.co.uk/ash-solid-wood-beds/. In the long term it’s probably inevitable that over time, ash will became more expensive as the demand starts to exceed the supply. Maybe now is a good time to buy a bed made from this beautiful wood!

If you are looking to match your ash bed with current furniture please request a timber sample from us, but please note that wood samples should be taken as indicative of the wood and finish – it is not possible to guarantee an exact colour match.

Caring for Ash Furniture:

Unless otherwise specified, our ash beds are finished in a durable clear soft satin (low sheen) lacquer. This provides an easy to care for and durable finish that doesn’t compromise the natural beauty of the wood grain. We suggest dusting your ash bed with a dry, soft cloth.

Solid woods may expand and shrink slightly with differences in temperature and humidity. Take care not place your furniture next to radiators or anywhere subject to any excessive changes in temperature or moisture content. If you are using our bedside tables – we recommend that all kitchenware and beverages should be placed on mats and any spillages should be wiped up immediately. Solid ash furniture may be subject to rough grain protruding from previously smooth surfaces, this is usually caused by humid conditions or a spillage, and is indicative of water being absorbed into the wood and causing the grain to swell.

Cleaning: To clean the wood finish, wipe with a slightly damp cloth and immediately buff with a dry cloth. In the event of more stubborn marks, a solution of mild detergent should be used on the cloth. Silicone based polishes should not be used on the wood as they will build up and leave a sticky residue on the surface.
