We’ve been making futons for a long time here at Natural Bed Company, over 30 years in fact, each one made to measure for our customers. It is that individual service that makes our futon mattresses stand out from the crowd, leaving you safe in the knowledge that your mattress was made with care, to your requirements and giving you the option if necessary (and with limits!) to make alterations to the size and shape of your futon.

So, let’s take a look at the advantages of buying a Natural Bed Company futon mattress, the customisation options available and how to ensure our futons help you have a great night’s sleep for many years.

Our futon mattresses work perfectly for sleeping on occasionally on our sofa-bed bases – which have fixed pine slats – and for everyday use on our range of contemporary wooden beds which have sprung beech slats that prolong the life of the fillings we use in our futon mattresses. In order that you buy the best mattress for your requirements we make the following recommendations:

– our 7 layer futon mattresses are suitable for those under 95kg in weight (this is an approximate figure – the taller the person is the greater the area the weight is spread over which ensures the futon can still give the necessary level of support, the reverse is also true though and in this case we would recommend a firmer mattress option)
– if you intend to sleep on our futon mattress every night, whatever your weight, we recommend that it is used with a bed base with beech sprung slats
– if you are at the near the suggested maximum weight (80-95kg) and intend to use the futon every night – you may want to consider ordering 2x 4layer futons to be used together, or a Relaxsan mattress, instead of the standard 7 layer futon.
If you are unsure which mattress is best for you please discuss your requirements with a member of our sales team – they will be happy to advise you.

As each futon is made to measure, it is possible to customise them to your needs. If your existing bed is a non-standard size, this should not pose a problem. Our only limitations are that the overall length should not exceed 200cm and the width 180cm. This allows for plenty of unique sizes to be catered for and ensures that the mattress stays in great shape for many years; we do not go any further than the stated dimensions so as to not put a strain on the materials that make up the mattress and shorten its potential lifespan.

Speaking of the make-up of our futon mattresses, if you were to look inside your mattress, you would find layers made up of polycotton, which gives the futon its bulk and makes up its core, a material called i-fibre which is polyester based and gives the futon its firmness, and finally an outer layer of wool – both a ‘breathable’ and a natural material. The fixed outer cover is made from cotton drill and is available in a range of colours, from neutral calico, mink or chocolate to more vibrant shades, including terracotta, coral and wine.

As you can imagine, over 30 years our futon designs have evolved and we feel that the current design is the best we’ve had, allowing use as a medium firm mattress and a comfortable sofa-seat when paired with our sofa-bed bases.

In order to protect your futon mattress, removable cotton (washable) or wool covers (which can be dry-cleaned) are available. We have a variety of wool options, from fabric manufacturer Warwick, which are perfect for our more substantial sofa-beds – the Cuba and Panama. In order to make the wool covers without a central seam, the maximum dimensions are 135x200cm.

Our futon mattresses will work with any of the contemporary beds in our range, but are perhaps best suited (style-wise) to the Low, Japanese and Platform bases such as the Kyoto, Oregon and Nevada beds.

Important – We want your futon mattress to last and you can help with this, we recommend that you turn the futon over and flip it from side to side every two weeks. Rolling the futon regularly will also help to ensure you get the most from the mattress.

We are currently working to a three week manufacturing lead time for our futon mattresses and can arrange delivery in the mainland UK and off- shore islands. (Please note, unlike our bed bases, we do not ship the futon mattresses internationally). Our futon mattresses arrive rolled and wrapped, and we can arrange delivery to take place on any week day on an overnight ‘deliver to-door’ service.

If you would like to request more information regarding a custom sized futon or receive small swatches of our wool and/or cotton fabrics please do not hesitate to get in touch, either via email at [email protected] or over the phone on 0114 272 1984.

  1. I am interested in purchasing a futon 6’3″ x 4’6″. I weigh 175lbs (70kg).
What would you recommend? Thickness? Price? Approximate weight of futon

  2. Hi, please could you give us a price for a futon mattress. We would be using it on a daily basis, so would need to be a cotton cover. The size would be 180cm x 140cm. And also delivery time. Many thanks. Trevor

    1. Hi Trevor,

      Thank you for your enquiry.
For everyday use, we would recommend our 7 Layer Futon, for the 180×140 size this would cost £350.00. Our futons are made to a 3 week lead time, meaning if you ordered today we expect your order would be ready in the week commencing the 31st of October.
If you would like to place an order or have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via phone on 01142721984 or via email at [email protected]

      Kind Regards,

      Beth
