The sunny weather can be a joy during the day, but when nights turn warm and sticky that can become a problem. Everyone feels better after a good night’s sleep and a cool and comfortable bedroom is a great start. Here we’ll take a look at our tips for keeping your bed feeling cool through the summer, from fresh bedding to comfy pjs.
A good place to start is by keeping your mattress and pillows fresh and protected. In hot weather you are likely to want to wash your bedding more frequently – it’s a lot easier to wash a mattress protector and pillow protectors than your pillows and mattress!
We offer a wide range of mattress and pillow protectors in natural fibres. Our cotton filled, lightly quilted mattress and pillow protectors are easy to machine wash and comfy to sleep on. If you ware looking for an organic option – we have a range to chose from including thick brushed cotton protectors, and organic cotton filled mattress covers.
Cotton is a classic choice for hot weather as it’s breathable and absorbent. Cotton fabric tends to have a loose weave, while cotton filling has an open texture – both allow air to circulate freely, preventing heat from being trapped against the skin.
I would always recommend light-weight layers in natural fibres for your summer bedding. A UK summer can always bring mixed weather, so having lots of light layers that you can quickly remove on hotter nights is the easiest solution.
Start with a fitted sheet in cotton, bamboo or linen. There are lots of options for your next layers. We have light, low-tog duvets with natural fillings and a wide range of duvet covers in cotton and linen. Alternatively a flat sheet with a light bedspread on top is a really flexible choice – you can also use the bedspread over your duvet in winter when the nights turn cold. Add a cosy throw for cooler nights, when it gets really warm remove the bedspread and just sleep under the flat sheet.
By choosing light layers in natural fibres you stand the best chance of staying cool this summer. Natural fibers can help regulate body temperature by absorbing and releasing heat, keeping you cooler in hot weather and warmer in cooler weather.
Don’t forget to consider the materials of your nightwear too. Again, as with your bedding, natural fibres are the best choice for your summer nightwear.
We would recommend loose fitting clothing, whether you prefer Pjs, night dresses or shorts and a t-shirt. When it gets really hot we have heard the suggestion to pop your nightdress or pyjama top in the fridge or freezer for a little while before bed! We’ll let you choose if this is one for you..The Britsh Red Cross suggest putting a pair of socks in the fridge during the day and slipping them on your feet before getting into bed. Cooling your feet helps to bring down your overall body temperature. A cool shower or foot bath before bed can help keep you feeling fresh for the same reasons. Add a refreshing shower gell or bath foam to get you in the right mood. (I particularly like Saltwick Bay body wash for that fesh, coastal scent)
Looking on-line there are lots more suggestions for keeping cool at night. We would recommend taking a look at the British Red Cross website for lots of handy tips.
We would also suggest pulling back your bed covers and leaving your bedroom window open (if you can safely do so) for a few hours before bed. An alternative to chilled socks is to partially fill your ‘hot’ water bottle with cold water and leave it in the freezer until the water freezes. Put the cover back on and place at the end of your bed for when your feet get too hot. An electric fan by your bed can be useful for a quick cool down when needed. A damp hand towel can also do the job.
