I think we’d almost forgotten what it looked like. The sun coming through the blinds in a morning and a warm breeze in the air. But now spring has sprung! The clocks have changed and the nights are lighter. There’re daffodils bustling in the fields and skies are blue. It’s the perfect time to do a good ol’ spring clean! Here’s our top tips on how to refresh your home for spring.
The first job on the list is often the hardest. Having a clear out is one of the ultimate spring cleaning goals. It can also be the most rewarding. Got a bag of clothes you’ve been meaning to donate? Now’s the time to take it to the local charity shop. Cupboards cluttered with odds and ends? Take it one cupboard at a time and make a pile of ‘to keep’ and ‘to go’. And try and be honest with yourself about what you actually do and don’t want…
Having a clear out gives you more space. Not only for new things, but also breathing room at home. A clutter-free zone can be soothing and calming, creating a relaxed environment for you to unwind. And, it doesn’t have to be your whole home. We all have a storage space/room that is constantly a mess. Life’s for living, after all! But, making a space for yourself that is calm and tranquil can seriously improve your mindset. So clear that cupboard, donate those clothes or – if you’re feeling really adventurous – maybe even start on the loft…
Cleaning is the name of the game here. A spring clean is all about doing a deep clean of your home or space. Once you’ve had a bit of a clear out, space opens up for you to get into the nooks and crannies. Time consuming though it is, giving your space a really good clean is so satisfying. Go above and beyond for your spring clean. Even if you’re only doing one room, be sure to give it the best clean you’ve given it for a while.
Pull the bed out and hoover the carpet behind it. Take the cushions off the sofa and brush them down. Maybe even take the covers off and pop them in the washer if you can. Grab bristle brush and get into the corners of the tiles in the kitchen. Give the grout in the bathroom and good scrub. These things often get the put to the wayside in the wake of more everyday cleaning, but they make such a difference when they’re done. Our top tip above all is to open the windows whilst you’re doing this. Not only does it allow that lovely spring air in, but it also gives dust a place to go, rather than settling on the surfaces again.
Okay. So everything is cleared out and nice and clean. Now, it’s time to get organised. Springtime is a time of renewal and reinvention. The perfect time to change up the look of your home and make the most of your space. Maybe you’d like to create a new display in the hallway? It’s also probably time to take the winter shoes out of the shoe cabinet and replace them with more warmer-weather-wear. Moreover, if you’re looking for new shoe storage, we have a lovely range of benches that would suit any contemporary hallway. Add a vase of daffodils near the door and you’re all set for the season!
Introducing new storage systems into the home can actually provide a source of relief. If there’s an area that’s just never quite looked right, or a build of items that don’t seem to have a home, a new cupboard, wardrobe or shelf can provide a place for things to live harmoniously. For me, it’s definitely clothes! We have a range of new open wardrobes that are right on trend, that would provide a place for a variety of items. Use them in the bedroom as a stylish, modern wardrobe or, pop them in the hallway to keep coats and shoes contained.
Once your spring clean is done and dusted, add the cherry on top with a springtime scent. Adding a diffuser or candle in a fresh, clean fragrance means your home not only looks and feels great, but smells great, too! Plus, scent is linked to memory. The feeling of calm and accomplishment you feel after completing your spring clean will resurface time and again when you light your new favourite candle or catch a hint of that lovely diffuser. Some of our favourites for springtime are the Fig & Orris or Oakmoss & White Amber from the Fox Cub & Co Scented Candles. Or, if you’re looking for a freshly-cleaned scent, you can’t go wrong with the White Cotton & Lily or Elderflower & Apple Blossom Mojo Candles. You can also browse our whole range just here.
We hope this article has given you some motivation to get started on your spring cleaning this year. It’s a big task (we know!) but you’ve got this. And, once it’s done, what better reason to treat yourself to an Easter Egg or hot cross bun?
