Mid-century modern continues to reign supreme in contemporary interior design. The minimal, laid back look of curved lines, warm tones and statement accessories has taken the internet by storm and shows no signs of shying away. In this article, we show you how to get the look with our own minimal take on mid-century bedroom styling – and break down the pieces we used to achieve it.

The Bed

The focal point of any bedroom, the bed is always our starting point. Pictured here is our beloved Camden bed in gorgeous oiled cherry. Every one of our beds can be crafted in all our hardwoods, and our new oiled finish stands to accentuate the timbers’ natural colours. The Camden is one of our most popular designs and fits in perfectly with the mid-century look. We’ve kept our design pared back with minimal, bold accents to compliment and highlight the cherry timber.

Cherry is naturally a deep, reddish gold colour, which only warms and deepens further over time. You can read more about the way cherry ages just here. A wonderful partner to the bold, warm tones of mid-century styling, cherry is an excellent choice for this type of design. The rounded edges and curved lines of the Camden can only help to enhance this look.

The Bedding

Keeping it simple is something we praise ourselves on at NBC. Therefore, we’re huge fans of minimal design. Creating a mid-century bedroom is a real exercise in taste – you can take it any which way you like! Whether you go minimal or all out bold, the mid-century look can take it.

We’ve kept our bedding almost monochromatic for this look. A combination of mustard, gold and yellow compliments the background of the cherry wood beautifully. For the bed linen, we’ve opted for our new Honeycomb Reversible Duvet Set in crisp white. Overlaid with gold and grey hexagons, this bedding adds brightness whilst picking out the warmer tones of the overall look. We’ve paired this with plush Velvet Tasseled Cushions in mustard, and a Recycled Alpaca Wool Throw with matching mustard and gold block shades.

The Bedroom Furniture

In order to bring more contrast to the overall design, we’ve added stark black accents in the bedroom furniture. A mid-century design staple is curves. A minimal design staple is pops of black. Therefore, our Round Black Side Tables from Ethnicraft are ideal for this look. One sits just to the left of the bedside; the tray design allowing for a slight overlap onto the bed itself.

To the right, we have the bold and beautiful Bok Chair in black, again from Ethnicraft. This is one of my personal favourite pieces, as it blends clean lines and curves for an intriguing, eye-catching design. Next to this we’ve added another small round side table to create a bit of a mini reading space. We’ve opted for the round Damien Side Table in oak with a white top to balance out the black accents.

The Accessories

To accessorise and finish off the look, we’ve added a few simple details. On the bedside table, we’ve popped a little plant and a Modern Ceramic Vase alongside a luxe LED Task Lamp in white to match the white bedding. On the chair to the right, we’ve also added a comfy Cotton Velvet Cushion in the colour caramel to the Bok chair to complement the warm tones in the room. To finish off this mid-century bedroom design, we’ve also added a small Round Oak Tray to the bed with one of our favourite mugs and an Organic Cotton Cloth. A touch of cosiness to complete the look.
