Though it has rained all day today (glorious British summertime!), the temperatures are still high at the moment. In summer, it’s worth looking at changing up your bedding. More breathable materials are ideal in warmer temperatures, and cotton is the standout favourite. Though other materials such as linen and silk are breathable and are good for summer, they tend to be on the expensive side. Cotton bedding is a great alternative as it tends to be more budget friendly, and is still a perfect option for summertime.
Here we discuss some of the different types of cotton bedding we stock, and our favourites from each range.
In bright, colourful tones – ideal for summer – these satin cotton bedding sets are new additions to our range. Made from luxuriously soft cotton with a silky, almost buttery texture, they are a great choice this season. Cotton satin is great for warm weather, as it is breathable and lightweight. It’s smooth texture is also cooling and soothing against the skin.
The Colourful Stripe Bedding (above) is made using organic cotton, finished with a satin feel. It features a bold, bright pattern of stripes in all the colours of the rainbow, with a neutral shade to the reverse. The Circle Pattern Satin Bedding is similarly bold and bright. Available in either orange or blue, this bedding features a blend of colours on each theme. The orange colour-way boasts tones of pure orange, through to pale pinks and rusty reds. Whereas, the blue colour-way has bold blocks of teals, pale blues and spring greens.
Muslin has a cosy, brushed texture. Normally, we would suggest brushed cotton for the cooler months, but muslin is not as heavy as brushed cotton. It has a more lightweight, breezy texture, but with a soft, gentle feel against the skin. It also boasts a rumpled, tousled look, reminiscent of linen bedding, which brings a relaxed vibe to any bedroom.
Our favourites amongst the muslin cotton range are the Organic Cotton Muslin Bedding sets (above). Available in four muted, warm shades, they’re modern and cosy. (We especially love the pink clay colour for summer – as mentioned in our recent blog post!) These bedding sets are also made with organic cotton. It is certified ‘Made in Green’ and is produced to strict ecological and social standards. Some other favourites are the Cotton Muslin Bedspreads and Cotton Muslin Throws. These are available in a wide range of colours – perfect for bring a pop of colour into a summer bedroom.
Egyptian cotton has the longest fibres out of any type of cotton. This means it is more resistant to pilling, pulling and is generally more hard-wearing. It also has a reputation for being soft and supple, and its open weave means it is extremely lightweight and breathable.
Some of our favourites in Egyptian cotton bedding are the Egyptian Cotton Luxury Bedding sets (above), available in a range of pale neutrals and pastel colours. A lovely choice for summertime, these sets include a duvet cover and 2x pillowcases. Fitted sheets are also available to purchase on the same page. Other lovely options are the 400TC Shell & Mink Egyptian Cotton Bedding sets and the 200TC Blue & Ochre Sets. The shell & mink sets are more muted, mauve-toned colours, and feature a smooth, sateen finish. Whereas, the blue and ochre colours have a more matte texture, but are still super soft!
A relaxed, rumpled look, stonewash cotton is a modern classic. Like your favourite pair of jeans or a much-loved t-shirt, stonewash cotton has a cosy, lived-in feel. The process quite literally includes pre-washing the cotton with stones, which rub against the fabric to create a gently textured, soft finish.
In terms of duvet sets, the go-to is our new Stonewash Cotton Bedding (above). Available in three breezy colours; light sage green, muted dusky blue and pure white. Lightweight and cosy, these are also lovely colours for summer. Some prefer to just use a bedspread in the warmer months. Bedspreads are great in summer as a light layer on their own, and they can also be layered over your duvet when it gets cold again! Our favourite options in stonewash cotton are the White Stonewash Cotton Bedspread, the Embroidered Bedspreads with Floral Design and the new Stonewash Cotton Bedspread Set in Limestone.
Organic cotton has seen a real rise in popularity over the last few years. The main differences between organic cotton and regular cotton occur in the making process. Organic cotton is produced without the use of harsh pesticides and can only be certified where natural fertilisers have been used. Chemical/synthetic fertilisers cannot be used.
We stock a wide range of products that are made with organic cotton, as well as a whole range of sustainable and organic products. You can find the whole collection just here on our website. In terms of bedding, one of our longstanding favourites has to be the classic Organic Cotton Bedding (above). This bedding is completely pure organic cotton; untreated and un-dyed. It has a subtle cream colour, and gets softer as it ages. For a softer, lighter feel from the offset, you could also take a look at the organic cotton bedding in either Ivory or Brown Melange. Another lovely option is the Finest Sateen Organic Cotton Bedding, which has more of a silken texture with a slight sheen.
