Handmade, made to order and sustainable. Our wooden beds really are unique. We make each one with care and attention to detail, using our own original designs. In this article, we share some of the things we think make Natural Bed Company beds particularly special. Read on for all the details!

Independent & Local

Working and operating from Sheffield, UK for the last almost 50 years, Natural Bed Company has gone through some changes since we began in the 1970s. Originally, we made water beds, then futons and futon beds and now, handmade solid wooden beds are our bread and butter. However, the one thing that’s always been a constant is our team of local staff and craftsmen.

We have two premises in Sheffield. Our showroom is in the city centre on Fitzwilliam Street, just down the road from Devonshire Green; a local park and events space in Sheffield’s Devonshire Quarter. Our workshop is further into Sheffield’s industrial sector, in nearby Attercliffe, where each one of our beds takes shape. Both the showroom and workshop staff are local to the city. Some members of the team have been with us over 20 years. As a showroom staff member writing this blog, I would honestly say that Natural Bed Company is a lovely place to work.

When you purchase one of our beds, you can be sure it’s made by us, right here in our hometown!

Made to Order & Original

Each of our beds are made with care and attention in our Sheffield workshop. Our woodworkers are highly skilled and treat each order with the utmost importance. According to our workshop manager, one of the best things about the job is seeing all that hard work come to life as each bed is made.

Every bed is made to order, so each one is entirely unique. We work with sustainable timbers, which have a myriad of grain patterns, tones and colours to appreciate. Not only is every ned made by hand, but also made out of a unique section of wood. No two are ever exactly the same. You also won’t find our designs anywhere else. Some of our designs have been with us for decades. In fact, this last year, we celebrated 30 Years of our Kumo Bed.

All our models are designed and made by us, often utilising feedback from our customers as well as influence from our own travels. Many of the beds are named after places in India, inspired by our founder Pete Bennion’s continued travels to the east. But you’ll also find beds with more local names, often from London, Scotland or even here in Sheffield. These are inspired by other staff members’ travels and passion for certain special places.

Sustainable & Made to Last

Natural Bed Company beds are all made from sustainable timbers. We offer a selection of six hardwoods across our whole range of designs. Plus, a good number of models are also available in three pine options. Our hardwoods come from sustainably-managed forests in northern Europe or USA, and our pine comes from Scandinavia. All our timbers are from a legally certified source, purchased under the EUTR (European Union Timber Regulation). This ensures a traceable supply chain and a commitment to sustainable production.

Moreover, we never use veneers. All our beds are made from the timber chosen by you on our website. Some of the inner parts of the beds are made from either pine or beech. The main frame of the bed is then crafted in the timber of your choice. The inner parts are not visible once the mattress is on the bed, and they are still made from solid wood. No part of a Natural Bed Company bed contains veneer or MDF. You can also read more about our timbers just here.

Each of our beds also comes with a 12-year warranty. We trust in the materials and processes that we use, and expect each bed to last at least this length of time. Often, we hear from customers who have had their beds much longer than this, with some customers saying theirs are still going after 20+ years!
