Japanese style emulates relaxation and tranquility. Your bedroom should be a place of calm and quiet, and as Japanese interiors are often based on balance and harmony, this is an ideal pairing. The clean lines and soft shapes also pair very well with contemporary, modern design, making this a match made in heaven for creating a calm, yet bold environment. Our Japanese style bed-frames are the ideal centrepiece for this look, and there are a whole spectrum of ways you can put your own stamp on them.

Minimal & Monochromatic

Contrast can be a great way to bring balance to any space. In the images below, you can see out Kyoto bed photographed in black stained oak and our Kyoto Day Bed styled with a black futon-style mattress.* Bringing contrast into a space can make a bold statement, but it can also read as more simple and understated. The use of minimal furniture and accessories helps in this. Keeping just the essentials on show, and only a couple of accent pieces throughout, gives your bedroom a calm, tranquil feeling.

We’ve chosen select items of furniture to pair with the Kyoto bed in these images. Items such as the Avio Table, the Geometric Side Table and Bok Chair from Ethnicraft. These bring a sense of contemporary style thanks to their unique, yet functional, shapes. This is the essence of minimalism – beautiful items with a purpose. It also ties in perfectly with Japanese interiors, where rooms are often sparsely decorated and space is an intentional part of the design.

*Unfortunately, we no longer make futon mattresses, but you can still find the Kyoto Day Bed with sprung mattresses which give a very similar look. The sprung mattress is available in the colour Kenya Dark Warm Grey, which is the closest match to the mattress pictured below.

The Kyoto Japanese-style bed frame also lends itself really well to storage solutions. We offer a range of under-bed drawers to suit the majority of our bed frames. The Kyoto has matching under-bed drawers, designed to sit snugly within the iconic plank legs of the frame. You can find them just here.

Bold & Colourful

Thanks to their minimal design, Japanese style beds really can be tailored to suit a variety of aesthetics. Here, we’ve styled our Kumo bed with bold pops of red for a brighter, more colourful look. The combination of dark greys, blacks and reds gives a traditional, yet modern feel, and the bed itself is made from solid oak – a classic choice that suits a wide range of interiors.

We’ve chosen to pick out the deep red wall with an accent throw in a brighter red colour, and paired the bed with the Madra bedside tables from Ethnicraft. These tables are very low to the floor and have a chunky, geometric profile. The perfect partner to our Japanese style beds!

Below, you can also see images of the Kyoto Day Bed in cherry and walnut. They’re paired with sprung mattresses in colours Larmony Curry (burnt yellow) and Mixed Dance Light Blue. These colours have bene enhanced via the throws and accessories paired with them, and bring a pop of colour to the day beds. It is also possible to order a cover for the sprung mattresses on the Kyoto Day Bed, meaning you can change the colour whenever you like! (Contact us if you’re interested in this option.)

Simple & Calm

Personally, this is my favourite look for the Japanese bed frames. Their plank legs give them the illusion of floating, which lends itself to a simple, calm style just perfectly. We have paired the Kyoto bed in beech with contrasting bedding in black and soft neutral tones, with minimal accent details such as a simple vase and candle on the Low Cube bedside tables. We’ve also matched the Kyoto Day Bed with a sprung mattress in Kenya Dark Warm Grey with neutral accent cushions and throws for an effortlessly cosy look.

You can also see our Kobe bed base here, paired with super simple grey and pale ivory bedding, made in sanded pine. The Kobe is the lowest version of our core Japanese-style beds collection, and features short plank legs for a relaxed, calming feel. You can find the whole collection of Japanese-style beds just here on our website.

To pair with any of our Japanese style bed frames, you can also find our Kyoto bedside tables. These tables, like our beds, are handmade to order in our Sheffield workshop. You can find them either with a drawer just here, or a shelf just here.

Find Your Style

At Natural Bed Company, we’ve been crafting handmade bed frames for over 30 years. In fact, we recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of our Kumo bed bed base – a Japanese style bed. Designed by our founder, Peter Bennion, this model has been with us since Natural Bed Co was still in its early stages. We still make the Kumo, along with the Kobe and Kyoto and the ever-popular Kyoto Day Bed.

We focus on making our beds from solid, natural hardwoods, and we feel this gives them a timeless quality. They can be re-styled whenever you find a new trend that piques your interest, and they’ll always fit right in!
