Classic and contemporary, the Chiswick handmade bed base, is available here as a special edition in solid English Oak. This modern design features a bold panel headboard, complimented by the elegant curves of the legs and gently softened edges. Crafted by hand in our Sheffield workshop and made from locally-sourced English Oak from Albion Timber.
Compared with American Oak (which we use as standard for all of our wooden beds), English Oak is much more characterful. Growing, harvesting and replenishing English Oak is a much smaller operation, resulting in a more natural look.
The colour is a beautiful golden shade, ranging from pale straw to deep honey browns. This timber features a strong grain and “Cats Paw” clusters of knots peppered throughout. This “Pippy” Oak is the result of the open nature of our woodlands. The easy light penetration encourages a quick growth of buds on the main tree trunks. These growths penetrate deep into the heart wood of the tree, and when cut they appear as ‘cat’s paws’ or patches of burr on the board.
The grain swirls around these knots and clusters, creating beautiful wild patterns and figures. Natural variations such as these are highly prized by furniture makers for truly unique pieces! These pips make stunning timber for special projects.

Our ‘natural’ look lacquer finish, named for its clarity, allows you to appreciate the myriad colours and subtle variations in tone of natural timber. It retains a very subtle, soft sheen which protects the timber from grease marks and some stains.
All our wooden beds come with sprung beech slats for extra comfort and to increase the life of your mattress. We also supply non-slip matting with this bed base to keep your mattress in place.

Mattress Depth Information: This bed is ready made and cannot be altered. It has been photographed with a mattress that is approx 25cm in depth.
If you have a much deeper mattress than this, we can customise the design by adding 5cm to the height of the headboard legs, raising the position of the headboard panel. However, please note that we cannot alter stock beds, so you would need to purchase this design on the standard lead in time if you would like the headboard height altering. Yes! Most of our handmade items can be tweaked with a variety of customisations. Please get in touch with our friendly sales team with your idea and we’ll let you know what is possible and provide a bespoke quote.
All of our bed bases are delivered flat pack for easy self assembly - we include our full range of assembly instructions online so you can see how straight forward this is! All of our tables are delivered as one piece, so no assembly would be required. Our under-bed drawers simply require the small castors screwing into place.
Our showroom is based in Sheffield city centre. We try to keep a variety of designs and timber son display, but if you’re hoping to see something specific, please do get in touch before your visit.
