We often talk about the sustainability of our bed bases, or the interior design styles that they suit the most. Or maybe even the bedding and colours that set off each of our timbers. But in this post, we thought we’d celebrate where our beds are made. Because, ever since our company was founded, our beds have been lovingly made in Sheffield.
Nestled in the north of the UK, our workshop sits in the thriving industrial quarter of the city. There, our team of woodworkers craft each of our beds by hand before they are sent on their way to you. We’ve been there a while, too! Our company was created in the 1970s by founder, Peter, and has gone through a lot of changes over the years. From water beds to futon mattresses; we’ve tried our hand at a whole range of crafts!
Also, supporting local, artisan trade is important to us. The majority of our staff are local to Sheffield and the surrounding areas, and we often work with local small businesses. Check out our blog post on Sheffield Small Businesses to see some of our favourites.
Though our beds are crafted just down t’ road, our timber is sourced from more sustainable locations around the globe. Moreover, we only work with sustainably managed forests certified under the EUTR (European Union Timber Regulation). For example, our pine comes from carefully managed forests in Scandinavia. While our hardwoods; ash, oak, maple, cherry, walnut and beech are from the USA or Northern Europe.
Our timbers are chosen for their range of colours, grains an patterns. Every bed ordered from us is completely unique – made by hand from a new piece of timber every time. Meaning your bed is the only one that will have that pattern/grain/tone; and as all timbers age over time, it will grow with you, too.
You can also read more about how timbers age in our dedicated blog post just here.
If you choose to buy a Natural Bed Company bed (and we hope you do!), you can be sure you’re buying something special. Some of the details of our most popular beds have become iconic over the years. Here are some of our favourites…
The CamdenA true customer favourite, our Camden style beds ooze mid-century style and modern simplicity. The hand-smoothed delicate lines are accentuated by the subtly rounded edges and curved leg shape. Finished with hand sanding to achieve that subtle flow.
The KyotoAnother ever-popular design, the Kyoto is simple and laid back. Inspired by traditional Japanese design, this is our most sought after low bed. Not only is it compact and slimline, it’s also sturdy and stylish. The Kyoto boasts hand-cut joints to the corners that set off the design, and has unique, plank style legs.
The KelhamHow could we do a post about Sheffield without talking about the Kelham? Named after a local area of Sheffield, the Kelham is a true show of craftsmanship. With our signature timber chevron headboard and expertly layered canopy design, it needs no further introduction…
The Oregon Ever the showstopper, the Oregon is designed for luxurious lounging. One of our lowest beds, it is ideal for loft spaces or large rooms alike. Crafted with a luxe sloping headboard and platform to the edges, the Oregon creates a space of relaxation, calm, and also – style.
Psst… Like the Camden and the Kelham? You should also take a look at our Hoxton bed!
