Futon Covers

The case on a futon is not removable so you may want an additional loose cover that you can take off and clean. But before you decide, consider the choice of fabrics for your futon. The Natural Bed Company has plain coloured brushed cotton drills (which have been given a stain resist treatment), cotton chenilles and calico.

The stain resist treatment on the cotton drills will help to repel liquids and give you time to mop them up with a kitchen towel before they penetrate the fibres. Being plain fabrics they will still be susceptible to marks.

The chenilles are plain colours but with a broken surface which is more forgiving of small marks and stains.

Calico is off white unbleached cotton and is the usual choice if the futon is used as a bed. For a folding futon sofa most people choose the coloured fabrics although for a very light, clean look, the calico can also be used.

If you decide to buy a loose cover for a folding sofa futon, you may decide to keep the cost down by using the cheaper calico fabric for the futon mattress and the coloured fabric for the removable futon cover. If you want to have a folding futon in calico, an additional calico futon cover is certainly recommended.

The futon mattress is always finished with ties or buttons which keep the filling in place. The futon cover doesn't have these ties and you may want to buy a futon cover because you prefer this neater look. Otherwise, the futon cover looks just like the futon case. Futon covers are also an excellent way to change the colour of your futon if you decorate.

Both the the futon and the futon cover have a zip around three sides. On the futon this is for convenience in manufacturing - it allows us to get the filling into the corners. On the futon cover this enables you to unzip around three sides and easily remove the cover.

Futon covers should be dry cleaned. Although they can be washed at 40°C we find that some washing machine temperatures are not very accurate and there may be shrinkage. Being heavy fabrics they are also difficult to dry and iron.

Mattress covers

If you're using the futon as a bed you could have an extra cover in calico but probably a better idea is to buy a mattress protector, also sometimes called a mattress cover. This fits over the futon like a fitted bottom sheet. It has elasticated corners which make it easy to remove for washing. It's hypoallergenic - which means it resists dust mites - and is quilted and more absorbent than a futon cover. It's also cheaper than a futon cover. They are slightly oversized but shrink to fit on the first wash.

The following options are available: single futon cover, double futon cover, king size futon cover and superking size futon cover; double mattress cover, king size mattress cover and super king size mattress cover.
