In the UK we may not be able to rely on sunny weather, but that doesn’t mean we can’t make our bedrooms fresh and bright. The coastal look makes a great summer bedroom look – it’s cool and relaxing (and frankly looks stylish all year round!) Coastal style can be as subtle as a colour scheme, or cover every choice from furniture to bedding and lighting.
A coastal bedroom is typified by blonde wood furniture and a colour scheme of blues (from turquoise to indigo) and white. We suggest looking at bedroom furniture in maple, ash or pale oak. These timbers range in tone from the very pale, cool tones of maple through the mix of gold and vanilla shades of ash, to the deeper golden tones of solid oak. On a tight budget? Take a look at our white-wash pine beds instead.
If you want to add some colour to the headboard of your bed – we have the Sol and Tao beds – the bed frame in solid oak or walnut, the headboard is lacquered MDF. You can pick any colour you like! We particularly recommend taking a look at the Farrow & Ball collection of paints – we can match any shade. We also have a range of beds with upholstered headboards – again with lots of choice for the headboard colour. Parquet – our wool fabric – in petrol, denim or turquoise would look great in a coastal scheme.
The fresh coastal look suits a wide range of beds. If you have an attic space with a low ceiling you may want to take a look at our Nevada and Ki low beds, both shown below in solid ash. Whereas a coastal master bedroom may suit one of our modern, 4-poster beds – try the Orchid, Oasis, Cube and Highland four-posters. This is a very accommodating look and the majority of our bed designs will suit, particularly if you choose a simple, contemporary design in a pale timber. We have a range of bedroom furniture in solid oak from Ethnicraft and the Black Lotus collection to suit these beds. Our Cube range of Sheffield made bedside tables are another good option, available in three heights and all our timbers.
New bedding is an easy, and relatively inexpensive way of achieving a coastal look. It’s a relaxed, cool look so you don’t have to worry about hospital corners! We recommend soft, linen bedding. We have linen bedding in a range of shades – including white, duck-egg blue, cool lilac-grey and a summery cornflower blue. Rumpled linen bedding adds texture and contemporary cool.
If you prefer something a little more formal try simple white cotton bedding (if you change looks later – this bedding will go with anything!) and add texture with a knitted throw or a quilted bedspread. Complete the look with a rustic lantern, driftwood picture frame or cover a small tray with candles in aqua and ivory.
