We have been a little in love with Scandinavian style for some time at Natural Bed Company. It has inspired a number of our bed designs and many of our bedding choices – so we thought it would be a good time to take a look at how you can use our bedding, solid wood beds and bedroom furniture to create your own ‘Nordic Cool’ bedroom: moody, modern and cosy too!

Cool & Contemporary – Scandinavian Style Bedroom Furniture

The Scandinavian style is exemplified by a lack of unnecessary decoration – choose simple elegant shapes for your furniture and accessories, with plain bedding and modernist lighting. For example – an Alva Aalto pedant lamp from Artek will look stunning over your Cube bedside table or Nordic dressing table.

Our Nevada collection of beds (including the Nevada, Sahara, Sonora, Tibet and Malabar bed designs) are perfect for this look. They are simple, pared back designs. They are all about the right proportions and have no superfluous decoration. With these beds the beauty of the timber is the focus. This collection is also a good choice for smaller bedrooms as the width of a bed from this range is the same width as the mattress, i.e. there is no extra frame around the edge taking up space.

These Scandinavian style beds work well with the Ethnicraft range of solid oak bedroom furniture and our own Cube bedside tables (available in three heights, so you’re sure to find one to match your bed.) The materials – solid hardwoods – are a timeless choice and hint at the tradition, craft and authenticity of Scandinavian furniture. The pure, rectilinear shapes are in keeping with our idea of contemporary Nordic chic.

If you are lucky enough to have room for a larger bed, take a look at our contemporary four-posters – the Orchid, Oasis and Cube beds. Dressed with plain linen bedding and a wool or faux fur throw – they are perfect for a grander take on this look.

A Natural Colour Palette – Paint, Blinds, Bedding and Accessories

You only need to watch a couple of episodes of The Bridge to see that they often have pretty similar weather there to us here in the UK! So we can be sure that the colour palette that suits them will look good here too. From bold black and white – to muted half tones in greys, blues and stone colours – Scandinavian decor will soften the cool, grey tones of our usual weather conditions.

Select simple roller blinds or plain floor length curtains in ivory, inky blue or black, with painted walls and, if possible, a solid wood floor will form the perfect back-drop to your Nordic bedroom. Take a look at our Pinterest board: Scandinavian Style for more decorating inspiration.

Go monochrome for a modern take on this look, or choose slightly softer tones – ivory, taupe, ink-blue and charcoal, if black and white is a little too modern for you. Black and white looks fantastic with cherry, walnut and oak – the warmth of these timbers, and the vibrant grain of the wood, will soften the austerity of monochrome, while softer, neutral mid tones will work with any timber.

Finishing Touches – Throws, Cushions & Lamps

To complete the look choose a modern knitted blanket or a faux fur throw. We have a wide range of throws available – the Bronte snowflake throw, bold Multi-block throw and the luxury Alpaca throws will look good with classic white or grey cotton bedding (take a look at our Egyptian cotton and 1000 thread count bedding if you don’t have this already). Our faux fur throws make the perfect finishing touch for this style, draped over the end of the bed or on a window seat. We have natural looking fur throws in Wolf Grey or Elk Brown, or plain fur throws (in white, mole grey or cream) which will add a cosy feel to your scheme.

  1. Do you have any photographs of the bed frames without mattresses on them?
It would be helpful to be able to see how the mattress is supported – is it wooden slats? If so are they curved or straight? If not, what is supporting the mattress?

    Many thanks
