It seems like a long time since the Shetland bed was added to our range and was the first bed to be offered with an upholstered headboard. In the last couple of years the upholstered bed collection has grown rapidly with the Arran, Iona, Skye and another soon to be launched option based on our popular Orchid four poster bed, added to the range.

With large headboard panels and vibrant fabrics, upholstered beds can easily make a statement in a room all by themselves, but sometimes customers require complimentary furniture to increase their storage options. We do try to show the most suitable furniture pieces in our photography, but it can be a little confusing to pair an upholstered bed with our wide range of bedside tables, chests and under-bed drawers, simply due to the fact that our range of storage options has grown even quicker than the range of beds we now offer!

With that in mind, I’m going to take a closer look at each of our upholstered beds and the bedroom furniture that best complements each base.

Before we get started it is worth noting that our Black Lotus range is available in only oak and walnut and the Ethnicraft collection in just oak. Our Cube and Kyoto tables, made in our Sheffield workshop can be ordered in every timber we offer: Oak, Ash, Beech, Cherry, Walnut, Maple and Pine. This also applies to our under-bed drawers.

The Shetland:

With an under-bed clearance of 25cm the Shetland bed can accommodate our Tibet under-bed drawers, the largest of the three we offer as standard. Measuring Width 90 x Depth 60 x Height 21.5cm, it is possible to fit up to four drawers under the base in sizes from a double (135x190cm) upwards and two for any smaller beds.

Moving on to bedside tables, both our Original and Tall Cube tables work well with this bed base, with the decision centering around whether you would prefer the top of the bedside table to be closer to the top of your mattress or the top of the side rail of the bed (with the Tall Cube for the former and the latter for the Original design). From our Black Lotus range, the 2 Drawer Shaker and Cube designs could be paired with the Shetland, both of which are similar in height to the Original Cube table.

The Arran Buttoned Bed:

With a lower clearance than the Shetland, the Arran bed best accommodates the Sahara under-bed drawers with dimensions of  Width 90 x Depth 60 x Height 16.5cm. As with the Shetland, I would recommend the Original Cube table, but it is worth taking a look at our range of Ethnicraft furniture here, especially the Ligna bedside cupboard (only available in oak).

The Skye Tall Buttoned Headboard Bed:

With a similar clearance and even taller headboard, all pieces of furniture mentioned for the Shetland base can be paired with the Skye (see images below), although you may wish to choose the Tall Cube over the Original, to better match the height of the headboard panel, although this is only my personal preference.

Take a look at the Ethnicraft collection for dressing tables, chairs and larger storage units too. As you can see from the images above the Frame dressing table and Osso stool in walnut, look fabulous with the Skye bed in walnut.

The Iona Low Upholstered Bed:

The Iona is the lowest bed base in our upholstered range and as such cannot accommodate under-bed drawers. I find either our Low Cube table or our Kyoto drawer table work well with this bed base, along with the Ethnicraft Madra low bedside drawer unit or the Ligna bedside cupboard – if you prefer a higher option to pair with the Iona.

We will be launching a new addition to our upholstered range soon based on our popular Orchid four-poster, and we will be introducing the new bed in a dedicated blog. Be sure to take a look for more information about the best bedroom furniture to pair with this particular base.

We currently have all of our upholstered beds on display in our Sheffield showroom along with a wide range of Black Lotus, Ethnicraft and Natural Bed Company made furniture, in a variety of timbers.
