The start of a new year brings with it much speculation as to the interior design trends that will shape, and colour, our homes this year. At Natural Bed Company we take particular interest in the design trends that are suitable for bedroom interiors and we’d thought we’d share these with you here. Lets take a look at the trends we can all embrace when updating our bedrooms for 2016:

The 2016 Colour Palette

The Pantone shades of the year are always of interest and often reflected in paint colours and products available on the high street. This year Pantone have selected Rose Quartz and Serenity as their colours for 2016. Rose Quartz is a very pale, subtle dusty-pink shade – a warm shade but soft enough almost to be classified as neutral! Serenity is a another dusty shade, this time of deep cornflower blue – nearer to lilac than turquoise.

Pantone explain their choice in this way – “As consumers seek mindfulness and well-being as an antidote to modern day stresses, welcoming colors that psychologically fulfill our yearning for reassurance and security are becoming more prominent. Joined together, Rose Quartz and Serenity demonstrate an inherent balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace….Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.”

These colours are perfect bedroom shades – as they are calming and restful. If, like me, you stick largely to neutrals in your decor (classic off-white, grey or taupe shades) you will be happy to hear that the Pantone shades also work wonderfully with neutrals – so you don’t need to change your entire bedroom scheme to be up-to-date. Just paint a feature wall in one of these colours or add some soft rose, or blue, bedding or cushion covers to your current scheme. Deep charcoal grey and soft silver or steel greys will lift the warmer rose colour, warmer taupe or cool off white will accent Serenity blue perfectly.

Pinterest have identified moody, inky blue-black walls as a trend gaining momentum into 2016. Deep blue or black walls, with my charcoal and mid-grey bedding, add a soft rose or blue throw and cushions – looks like I’ve decided on my new bedroom scheme for 2016!

Strong shapes – bold, modern furniture for 2016

According to thrifty-home.co.uk “Strong shapes and geometric designs are a key look in 2016.” We couldn’t agree more – simple, bold shapes are unlikely to date and will give your scheme an air of confidence.
We would suggest you take a look at our Nevada collection of beds (including the Nevada, Sahara, Malabar, Tibet and Sonora beds) if you are looking for a pared-back design with a contemporary edge. Select walnut for a luxury bedroom feel or oak for a fresh, modern style. Our Cube bedside tables (available in various heights) will emphasise the bold, contemporary look.

We also supply a range of Ethnicraft furniture in solid oak with a soft, matt oiled finish that give the timber a pale, ultra-matte look. The Nordic collection is perfect for this style as the designs are elegant, geometric compositions. The Madra bedside table is a good choice for next to a very low oak bed (such as our Nevada or Sonora beds) – again it has a strong, simple shape.

Natural materials – Authenticity and eco-consciousness

Many of the design writers and influencers have once again been talking about a renewed interest in the eco-credentials of the companies we buy from and the impact on the environment of the materials we choose to buy. This concern for sustainability has resulted in a strengthened appreciation for natural materials – such as solid wood (we couldn’t agree more!), stone, cotton and wool.

Mixing quality products in natural materials will ensure – not just a coherent, contemporary interior design scheme – but also a timelessness in style that will reward the investment, this look won’t date quickly and well made pieces won’t need to be replaced for years. At Natural Bed Company we make solid wood beds (all made locally, with a 12 year manufacturers guarantee) and offer bedding in natural cotton, linen and wool, so you can be sure to find a selection of furniture and bedding that you can feel good about buying and appreciate for years to come.

Magpie inspired! Shiny metallics are still strong in accessories this year…

Happily it seems this trend from 2015 is set to continue into 2016 – House Beautiful suggest mixed metals are the way to keep the look current. So if you have accessories in copper, rose gold, brass, silver or stainless steel (vases, photo frames, metallic fabrics etc) – don’t feel that you need to select just one tone, a mix of silver and rose gold can look beautiful, while brass and stainless steel can add a hint of retro-industrial style.

We suggest taking a look at our Zari bedding – these Indian duvet covers in black, teal or russet have a simple, subtle design in gold embroidered brocade and are a great way of adding a touch of the ‘metallic’ style without it dominating the room. Add a brass bedside table lamp and gold or copper photo frames (we stock a fantastic selection from Umbra at our Sheffield store) to complete the look.
