Here at Natural Bed Company, we have been hand making futon bases and mattresses in Sheffield for nearly 40 years. In this blog I’d like to breakdown some of our favourite solid wood futon base and sofa bed options for both master and spare bedroom sleeping solutions!
The Cosy Compact Sofa Bed is a great, simple Sofa bed option, giving you the flexibility of a space saving sofa which pulls out into a full 80x200cm, 140x200cm, 160x200cm or 180x200cm sized bed.The fabric base comes in in a range of colours to suit your style. This sofa bed base is perfect for small spare rooms/home offices!
The Mid-Century style sofa bed contains simple “click clack” hinges which makes transforming this sofa into a full 140x200cm bed base super straight forward and easy!Featuring a sprung futon style mattress, this sofa bed gives the feeling of sleeping on a standard bed base – extra comfort for your guests! This base comes with solid Oak arm rests, which give it a luxurious and sophistacted look. There are also a range of fabric options so you’re sure to find something that matches your space! The Mid-Century Sofa Bed base is a little larger than the Cosy Compact, so is better suited to larger spare rooms or your living room.
Inspired by our most popular bed design, The Kyoto is now also available as a day-bed – it comes complete with a futon mattress and optional head-rest cushion. This futon base is shown here with a walnut base and a black futon – perfect for a sophisticated and luxurious modern look. This incredibly comfortable day-bed can be used to relax on, or as additional seating or a useful extra single bed.
These futon bases are perfect for those wanting to keep their space minimal and clutter free whilst still injecting a modern and fresh style. The Kyoto bed base is our original oriental look bed and is also our most popular – a design classic. We have been hand making this wooden bed for decades and it never goes out of style. Over the years we’ve subtly updated the design but the the geometric simplicity and the beautiful, carefully thought through proportions have always stayed the same.
In the same style as the ever popular Kyoto, we also have the Kumo and the Kobe. The Kumo has a height of 21.5cm whereas the Kobe is our lowest futon base at 14cm high, perfect for making smaller spaces feel larger.
All of our bed bases are hand made to order in our Sheffield workshop and are available in our full range of solid timbers including Pine (stained, clear lacquered or sanded for your own treatment) and our hardwoods range: Beech, Ash, Oak, Maple, Cherry or Walnut.
The Oregon is not the futon base to choose if you are working with a small space. The wide timber frame and angular design result in an ultra modern look. This bed can give a very boho ‘New York Loft’ look, but you can also choose a more ‘Oriental Style’ scheme depending on the timber choice and how you style the bed.
Minimal, modern and chic. The solid wooden Ki futon base is perfect for loft spaces (thanks to it’s low height and the lack of a headboard) making smaller rooms feel bigger yet still cosy!
If you’re looking to make more of a statement master bed, take a look at the Kulu or Koo bases. Their extra large headboard panels (available with our without small tables) add a stylish impact and can be made in any of our hardwood timbers. The Koo features a painted headboard where we can match any Farrow & Ball, Pantone or RAL shade so its certain to compliment your current colour scheme. The Kulu can be left looking natural, or, recently we have added the Black Kulu to our range, where you can choose certain sections of the Oak bed to be finished in our Black lacquer, giving a lovely contrast to the warm golden oak and a more modern look!
Hopefully you’ve found this look into a few of our post popular futon base options helpful and seen some design ideas you can implement in your own spare or master bedrooms!
