Discover our collection of handcrafted Japanese style beds, made to order in our Sheffield workshop. Defined by clean lines, low platforms, and an uncluttered geometric simplicity, these designs suit minimalist and Japandi interiors beautifully. Every bed is built from solid sustainably sourced hardwood – in your choice of timber and size – with a 12-year structural guarantee as standard.
The Japanese style bed traces its popularity in the UK back to the rise of the futon in the eighties and nineties, which first drew western attention to the beauty of Japanese minimalism – clean lines, no clutter and a low, grounded sleeping platform. The Kumo was one of the first beds in our collection. It’s named after the Japanese word for cloud, and remains one of our most popular beds today, along with its close relations the Kobe and Kyoto.
All of our Japanese style beds are made from solid hardwood – walnut, cherry, oak, beech, ash and maple - at our Sheffield workshop, with some designs also available in pine. Because every bed is made to order, you can choose your timber and size, and often request custom sizes and even changes to the frame’s dimensions.
The Kyoto is one of our most established designs. Available both with and without a headboard, it offers a clear expression of Japanese style – a low, simple frame with crisp, minimal lines. The Kumo and Kobe are the same designs, but with shorter legs, perfect for those looking for something very low to the ground.
As well as our standard timbers, the Kyoto is available in stunning Scottish Elk.
For a slightly more contemporary take, our new designs, the Osaka and Nara bring with same Japandi sensibility with a more refined, mid-century style frame. We think of them as a cross between the Kyoto and our Camden collection, and they are proving to be very popular so far. For of these frames work with and without a headboard, and also look great in Scandinavian inspired bedrooms.
If you want a very low profile, the Ki is a true low loft bed, while our platform designs – the Oregon and Kulu – offer a more architectural, statement making take on the style. The Kulu can be seen here in a black oak finish for a bold, contemporary look.
Every Japanese bed in this collection comes with beech sprung slats as standard, with fixed pine slats available as an optional upgrade. All beds carry our 12-year structural guarantee, and most can be customised. Please get in touch if you would like to discuss some options.
Low, minimal designs – Our Japanese bed collection features a range of different shapes and styles, but they are all low, minimal designs that work well in Japanese inspired interiors.
