Oak is still the most popular timber choice for our beds. We think it may be because we have such a wide range of contemporary bedroom furniture in oak, so it’s easy to put together a whole new bedroom scheme! With this in mind we thought we’d take a look at our oak bedroom furniture and the beds which best suit the various collections.
This is a classic collection with contemporary styling. The classic Shaker look has been brought up to date with a recess handle to the drawers, resulting a clean, modern look. The collection includes the following pieces:

The 2 drawer bedside units are a good choice to pair with our mid height beds – you can see them photographed here with our Malabar bed in oak. The Malabar is around 30cm in height to the top of the side rail (91cm overall height) so, with a 16-20cm mattress on the bed base, the 2 drawer unit is a similar height to the top of the mattress. Other bed bases of similar proportions are the Arran, Camden, Mandalay and Sahara beds. The 3 drawer bedside chest is a good choice for taller beds – a bed with side rails at around 40cm would be perfect, as a mattress of around 20cm in depth will take the height to around the same height as this chest. Take a look at the Orchid, Oasis, Cochin and Zanskar beds. You can see the 3 drawer bedside unit works well next to the Shetland bed below.
The other storage units are larger pieces offering lots of storage space, they have the same shaker look and classic proportions. A wide range of our solid oak beds will suit the Shaker collection, we particularly like the Shetland bed and Orchid 4 poster as the designs reflect the refined geometric elements of the Shaker chests. The Shaker range is exclusive to Natural Bed Company, batch produced for us by a family company in Vietnam.
The Cube Collection from the Black Lotus range is very modern in design and incorporates a wide range of storage solutions:

The 1 Drawer unit and Open Shelf Unit have been very popular with customers who have ordered low, wide beds and are looking for a modern bedside to suit the look. The Kyoto, Sonora and Kulu have been popular choices of bed to pair with these units. The 2 drawer bedside unit is a great choice to pair with taller beds, and suits smaller bedrooms as this unit takes up very little floor space. At a height of 50cm I would suggest the following beds work with the 2 drawer bedside: Tibet, Skye, Highland and Oasis beds.
The end-of-bed units are available with or without a drawer, they can be used as a useful bench (where better to place your breakfast tray?) and a place for storing some extra bedding and your slippers. You can see the unit with a drawer shown above with the modern Cube four poster (and low 1 drawer units). The larger storage units are 3 drawer and 5 drawer chests – these work well with any of our modern beds – we particularly like the look of the Cube range with the Oasis bed as the repeat of the rectangle motif ties the elements together.
We also offer a wide range of bedsides tables to suit our most popular low oak beds. The Japanese style beds we offer – Kyoto, Kumo, Kobe and Ki – are popular due to their quality and simplicity, so it’s important to find bedside tables that don’t disguise the bed design. The Kyoto table has been specifically designed to work with the Kyoto and Kobe beds – it is available in two versions – the Shelf Table and the Drawer Table. Just select the option that best suits your needs. The low Cube table made at our Sheffield workshops is also a good choice and available in every timber option, including oak.
Ethnicraft also supply a number of low oak tables. The Madra table – shown above with the Ki bed base is low, but as it has a deep storage drawer so it’s very useful! The Frame is another good option for low beds and small bedrooms as the base of the table can slide under the bed and so it takes up very little room. If you are looking for a flexible option – somewhere to rest a book and your phone, that can also be used as a seat – take a look at the Osso stool. The Osso is available in natural oak or black stained oak and lends any scheme a stylish, Japanese look. The Osso looks great with our Kyoto, Kumo and Kobe beds – it’s shown above with the Kyoto.
The Monolit range of bedroom furniture is in solid oak with a square section, painted metal frame. The options are – natural oak with a black frame, natural oak with a white frame or black oak with a black frame. The collection includes bedside tables (with a single drawer), a 2-door cupboard, a low media/storage unit (with one drawer and one flip-down door) and a console table (with two slim drawers and a shelf). This range is contemporary in style with an industrial look, it suits are simple modern beds with a strong geometric design. Try the Sonora, Kyoto, Orchid or Cube.
The Blackbird and Whitebird range works well with the Monolit collection as it also incorporates a painted frame and natural oak. The Blackbird range includes a single drawer bedside and a two drawer dressing table/desk. The wooden parts are in oak – the outer carcass is stained black while the drawers are in natural oak, the metal frame is in black. The Black Orchid would look great with this collection.
The Whitebird range has the same black metal frame, but the wooden part does not have the back stained outer, instead it is all in natural light oak. The Monolit, Whitebird and Blackbird bedside units are all around 50cm in height. They therefore suit similar beds, you may also want to consider a contrast between the crisp lines of these units and a soft, upholstered headboard – the Arran and Iona would look great with these bedside units.
The Ligna range includes bedside cupboards and 2 drawer/2 door units – on polished metal legs. The bedside cupboards are very useful if you need to maximise your storage space – the upper slim drawer is great for keys and a book, the lower cupboard can take extra bedding or nightwear (or a big stack of night-time reading!). The bedside units are 50cm in height and, like the Monolit, suit most of our mid-height beds. You can see it below with our Camden and Highland beds, but this compact unit also looks good with our lower beds, such as the Iona, where the cupboard tops sits just above the top of the mattress.
The Ligna Cupboard is H 78 x W 110 x D 45cm and incorporates two upper drawers with a 2 door unit below (there is also an internal shelf). This is a really useful piece of bedroom storage as it takes everything from socks to jumpers! There is also a Ligna media unit available. A useful storage cupboard for the bedroom or lounge, this unit has two lower drawers and two open storage sections. One of the open sections can be used to house cabled media units (DVD player etc) as it has a cable slot at the rear.
